How to Choose a Supplement Manufacturer: 10 Criteria

Your contract manufacturer makes the product, but your brand answers for it to consumers and regulators. Before signing, compare manufacturers on objective criteria. Here are the 10 things to check when choosing a supplement manufacturer, and the questions to ask on the very first call.

Key facts
  • A supplement contract manufacturer produces products on behalf of a brand, a lab or a distributor.
  • Certifications (ISO 22000, HACCP, FDA registration for the US) are the first filter.
  • Dosage forms, regulatory support and flexibility on quantities make the difference.
  • Always ask who owns the formula and how it is protected.
  • A manufacturer that stores and ships saves you a separate logistics provider.

What does a supplement contract manufacturer do?

A supplement contract manufacturer produces dietary supplements on behalf of another company. Depending on the project, it makes your own formula, offers its standard formulas as white label, or develops a custom formula with you. The product leaves its lines with your label and your brand name.

Manufacturers vary widely in size, specialty and service level. The right choice depends on your project: dosage form, volumes, target markets and how much support you need. The 10 criteria below help you compare offers on solid ground, whether you are a startup, an established brand or a lab adding a new SKU.

10 criteria to vet a supplement manufacturer

This is the first filter. Check for ISO 22000 (food safety management) and HACCP. If you sell in the United States, FDA registration of the facility is essential; US brands will also ask about cGMP practices. Request current certificates, not just a logo on a website. Ours are listed on our quality certifications page.

A capsule specialist is not necessarily comfortable with gummies or powders. List the forms you need today and tomorrow: capsules, tablets, effervescents, powders in tubs or stick packs, gummies, drinks. A manufacturer covering several forms in-house makes building a range much simpler.

If you start from an idea rather than a formula, you need a real formulation team: choice of actives and their forms, compatibility, taste, texture and stability. Ask how a development project runs and what is included.

Maximum levels, permitted botanicals, novel foods, health claims, mandatory label statements, pre-market notification: supplement regulation is demanding, and EU rules differ from US rules. A manufacturer that checks your formula and label for each market saves you costly recalls.

Minimum order quantities vary a lot. Ask what is possible on standard formulas and on custom ones, and how volumes can grow afterward. At Irati Production, small batches are available on our standard formulas; for a custom formula, the minimum depends on development.

Ask how suppliers are qualified, which certificates of analysis are required for each lot, and what is tested on receipt. You should be able to obtain the specifications of the raw materials in your product.

Every finished batch must be traceable to the raw material lots used, with in-process checks and release testing. Ask which documents come with each batch delivery.

Who owns the formula? Can you take it with you if you switch manufacturers? Settle these questions in writing from the start, with a non-disclosure agreement before any sensitive data is shared.

Finished goods storage, order picking, shipping to distributors or directly to end customers, returns handling: a manufacturer offering these services saves you coordinating a separate third-party logistics provider. See our storage and logistics offer.

A great manufacturer with no capacity is of no use to you. Ask about available capacity, how production planning works and who will manage your project day to day. The quality of the first exchanges is often a good indicator of the relationship ahead.

Summary table: questions to ask

  • Certifications : Which current certificates can you send?
  • Dosage forms : Which forms do you make at your own site?
  • Regulatory : Who reviews the formula and the label?
  • Quantities : What do you offer for a first batch?
  • Formula : Who owns the formula you develop?
  • Logistics : Can you store and ship my products?

Red flags

  • Certifications you cannot get in writing.
  • No clear answer on formula ownership.
  • Promises of health claims that are not on the EU register.
  • A "manufacturer" that does not actually produce and subcontracts without telling you.
  • Slow, vague answers during the consultation stage.
  • No documentation on raw material origin or test results, even when you ask for it explicitly.

How to run your manufacturer search

To compare several manufacturers fairly, write a short product brief and send it to each one in the same terms:

  • The product: dosage form, dose per serving, units per pack, desired taste or look.
  • Positioning: vegan, sugar-free, organic, sports, kids, seniors; each choice affects the formula.
  • Volumes: first batch and 12-month forecast.
  • Markets: US, France, the EU or other export markets, which drive labeling.
  • Services needed: formulation, regulatory, packaging, storage, shipping.

Then compare the answers line by line, looking at how clearly each manufacturer explains its process as much as at the proposal itself. Ask for sample documents too, such as a blank certificate of analysis or a product spec sheet: they show how rigorous the quality system really is.

Finally, think beyond the first order. A good manufacturer should be able to follow you as you add new SKUs, new dosage forms or new markets. Choosing a partner with several forms and logistics in-house avoids starting the search all over again in a year.

Why work with a manufacturer in France?

Manufacturing in France means a partner operating under EU and French food law, short transport routes to European customers, and a "Made in France" origin that reassures shoppers. For US brands, an FDA-registered European manufacturer is also a way to offer EU-made products. Irati Production manufactures in Saumur, France: pectin gummies, capsules, tablets and effervescents, powders, functional drinks and pet supplements.

Your questions

Our answers on choosing a supplement manufacturer

What does a supplement contract manufacturer do?

It produces supplements on behalf of a brand, a lab or a distributor. It makes the client's formula, a standard white label formula or a custom-developed formula.

Which certifications should a supplement manufacturer have?

At a minimum, ISO 22000 certification and HACCP. FDA registration is required to sell in the United States.

Who owns the formula with a contract manufacturer?

It depends on the contract: a standard white label formula usually stays with the manufacturer, while a custom formula can belong to the brand. Settle this in writing before development starts.

Can a supplement manufacturer ship directly to my customers?

Some do. Irati Production can store your products in Allonnes, France, and ship them directly to your end customers on request.

How do I compare several supplement manufacturers?

Compare them on the same criteria: certifications, dosage forms, regulatory support, quantities, formula ownership and logistics. Send each one the same questions in writing.
