How to Start Your Own Supplement Brand: A Manufacturer's Guide

Want to start your own supplement brand and looking for a manufacturer? Most guides on the topic are written by consultants. This one is written by a manufacturer: which decisions to make and in what order, what the manufacturer handles, what stays with your brand, and how to test your market without tying up cash in inventory.

Key facts
  • Starting a supplement brand means choosing a positioning, a dosage form, a model (white label or custom) and a manufacturer.
  • White label lets you start on a proven standard formula in small batches; custom formulation creates a formula that belongs only to you.
  • In France, every food supplement is notified to the DGCCRF before it goes on sale, through the Compl'Alim platform (which replaced Teleicare).
  • Only claims authorized under Regulation (EU) No 432/2012 may appear on the label and in advertising in the EU.
  • Irati Production makes gummies, capsules, tablets, powders and functional drinks in Saumur, France, with storage and fulfillment from Allonnes.

Starting a brand vs launching a product

Launching a product is a project: formula, production, label, notification. We cover those product launch steps in a separate guide. Starting a brand is a series of decisions that shape your business for years: what universe, which range, which manufacturing model, how much inventory risk, which sales channels. This guide focuses on those structural choices, seen from the production floor.

Step 1: define your positioning and your first range

Successful brands do not launch twenty SKUs. They start from a clear need and a clear audience, then expand. Before you contact a manufacturer, answer four questions:

  • Who is it for? Athletes, busy women, seniors, families, healthcare professionals, gym members, pharmacy shoppers.
  • What need does it address? Sleep, energy, sport, beauty, immunity, digestion. The need drives ingredients and the claims you can make.
  • Which channel? Your own e-commerce site, marketplaces, pharmacies, gyms, specialty retail. The channel shapes the format and the packaging.
  • What promise? Natural, vegan, sugar-free, made in France, high potency. Every promise must be backed by the product specification.

Three to five well-chosen products are enough for a launch. Add more based on actual sales, not on guesses.

Step 2: choose the dosage form

The dosage form shapes the consumer experience, ingredient stability, unit cost and brand image. The forms we manufacture:

Enjoyable, high compliance, strong online appeal

Gummies

Vitamins, magnesium, sleep, creatine

Precise dosing, botanical formulas

Vegetable capsules

Botanicals, minerals, probiotics

High potency, pharmacy format

Tablets and effervescents

Vitamin C, magnesium, electrolytes

High doses, sport and drinks

Powders (doypack, tub, stick packs)

Creatine, whey, electrolytes, collagen

Daily ritual, lifestyle appeal

Functional drinks

Mushroom coffee, matcha, lattes

The same formula can often exist in two forms: a powder in a doypack for daily use and stick packs for trial or travel, for example. We help you pick the form that best suits your ingredients and your audience.

Step 3: white label or custom formula

This is the most structural decision. We compare both options in detail in white label vs custom supplements. In short:

  • White label (private label): you pick one of the manufacturer's standard formulas, already formulated and tested, and sell it under your brand with your label. It is the fastest, lowest-risk way to start.
  • Custom formulation: the formula is developed for you (ingredients, doses, flavor, texture). It sets you apart, but requires development work, trials and minimum quantities tied to that development.

Many brands combine both: they start with white label to validate their market, then develop an exclusive formula for their hero product.

Step 4: test your market with small batches

The biggest risk for a new brand is not production, it is unsold inventory. At Irati Production, small batches are available on our standard white label formulas: you launch a product, a flavor or a format in limited quantity, measure the response, then scale up on the same recipe and at the same site. Details are on our small batch supplement manufacturing page. For a custom formula, the minimum depends on the development.

Step 5: regulatory steps in France and the EU

Your brand is the operator responsible for placing on the market the products that carry its name. The main obligations for the EU, with France as an example:

  • Compliant composition: vitamins, minerals, botanicals and other substances must be permitted, at doses that comply with EU and national rules (Directive 2002/46/EC and, in France, Decree No 2006-352).
  • Notification: in France, each supplement is notified to the DGCCRF before its first sale through the online Compl'Alim platform, which replaced Teleicare. Other EU countries have their own notification procedures.
  • Labeling: the name "food supplement", the characterizing nutrients or substances, the recommended daily portion, a warning not to exceed it, a statement that supplements should not replace a varied diet, "keep out of reach of young children", plus the Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 particulars (ingredients, allergens, net quantity, best-before date, batch).
  • Claims: only claims from the EU register (Regulation (EU) No 432/2012), in their authorized wording, such as "vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system".
  • Novel ingredients: an ingredient not consumed to a significant degree in the EU before 1997 falls under the Novel Food Regulation and must be authorized.

For the US market, labels follow FDA rules, with a Supplement Facts panel; our site is FDA-registered. Our regulatory support team checks the formula, drafts or reviews the label and prepares the notification file.

What the manufacturer handles, what the brand handles

  • Standard or custom formulation : Positioning, name, brand universe
  • Sourcing and testing raw materials : Packaging design and trademark registration
  • Production, packaging, release testing : Final sign-off on the label and claims
  • Regulatory review and draft label : Notification and placing on the market under your name
  • Storage, order picking, shipping : Marketing, sales, customer service

Step 6: logistics and distribution

A new brand rarely has its own warehouse. From our Allonnes site near Saumur, we store your finished goods, prepare orders for your distributors and, on request, ship directly to your end customers, returns included. You stay focused on selling.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I start my own supplement brand?

Define your audience and first range, choose the dosage form, then the manufacturing model (white label or custom). The manufacturer produces the product and checks compliance; your brand notifies it to the authorities and sells it.

Do I need a license to sell supplements in Europe?

No specific license is required in France to sell food supplements, but each product must be notified to the DGCCRF before its first sale, and the brand is responsible for compliant composition, labeling and claims.

What is a white label supplement?

It is a standard formula designed and made by a manufacturer that you sell under your own brand and label. It is the fastest way to start a brand without developing a formula.

What is Teleicare?

Teleicare was the French online platform used to notify food supplements to the DGCCRF; it has been replaced by Compl'Alim, which brands now use to declare each supplement before its first sale in France.

Can I start a supplement brand with a small order?

Yes. At Irati Production, small batches are available on our standard white label formulas; for a custom formula, the minimum depends on the development.
